7 Outdoor Lighting Ideas That Transform a Wrexham Garden After Dark

The right outdoor lighting changes a garden from "somewhere you sit in summer" to "somewhere you actually use eight months of the year." It's the single biggest impact upgrade we install for homeowners in Wrexham, and it's almost always cheaper than people expect.
Below are seven ideas we've installed locally — what they look like, where they work best, and roughly what they cost.
1. Warm wash on the back wall of the house
If you have a brick or render wall facing into the garden, two or three downlights mounted under the soffit (the bit where the roof overhangs) will wash the whole wall in a soft warm glow. This is the closest thing to a "wow" effect for the money — it makes the entire garden feel larger and the house feel grander.
Best for: terraces, semis, anywhere with a clear back elevation. Roughly: £350–£600 fitted, two to three fittings.
2. Pathway markers
Low-level bollard lights (around knee-height) spaced every 1.5–2 metres along a path don't try to illuminate the path — they just mark its edges. The result is a subtle "runway" effect that's both beautiful and genuinely useful for safety in winter.
Best for: any pathway from a side gate to a back door, or from a patio to a garden building. Roughly: £40–£70 per fitting installed, depending on length.
3. Upward-facing spike spots in planting
The single best trick we know: put a small adjustable spike spot in among the plants, angled up into a tree, shrub or feature plant. It's almost invisible during the day and looks magical at night. Three or four of these scattered through a border will completely change how the garden reads.
Best for: any garden with established planting, a specimen tree, or sculpture. Roughly: £55–£90 per fitting installed.
4. Mounted lanterns on a pergola or summerhouse
A simple matt-black wall lantern (the kind you'd see on a Cotswold cottage) mounted on the outside of a garden building gives it a destination feel — it now reads as "somewhere to walk to" rather than just a shed. Pair with a smart switch and you can have it come on at dusk automatically.
Best for: summerhouses, home offices in the garden, posh sheds. Roughly: £180–£280 per fitting installed.
5. Decking strip lights
Recessed LED strip along the front lip of a decked area gives you a clean modern line of light that's flush, doesn't dazzle anyone sitting on the deck, and makes the space feel like an outdoor room. The trick is to keep it warm white (2700K or 3000K) — cool white looks like a fishmonger's counter.
Best for: any raised decked area. Roughly: £180–£350 per linear metre depending on access.
6. Hidden tree uplighters
For larger trees in a back garden, a recessed in-ground uplighter set into the lawn or border at the base of the tree throws the foliage into stunning silhouette. The fitting itself is invisible during the day. We install these in a sealed housing so you can mow over them.
Best for: mature gardens with one or two specimen trees. Roughly: £120–£200 per fitting installed.
7. Smart control — the upgrade that pulls it all together
Once you have more than a few outdoor lights, controlling them with switches at the back door gets old fast. A simple smart controller lets you set scenes ("Dinner" turns on the patio + planting, "Late" dims the path lights, "Off" turns everything off) and schedules ("Come on at sunset, off at midnight").
We typically use Hue Outdoor or LightwaveRF — both work with Alexa and Google Home.
Roughly: £150–£300 for the controller and setup on existing lights.
What about safety, IP ratings, and getting it right?
All outdoor lighting needs to be IP44 rated as a minimum, and anything that might get directly soaked needs IP65 or higher. The wiring needs to be the correct gauge and depth (or surface-clipped properly), protected by an appropriate RCD, and certified.
This isn't a DIY job. Bad outdoor lighting installations are one of the most common causes of nuisance tripping and, in worst cases, garden electrocutions when the cable gets caught by a spade.
